"Annual Volunteer Recognition Event"

Sep. 20th, 2012, by Karina Jones

We'd like to give a BIG THANK YOU to every volunteer who has supported us during our 2012-2013 Campaign year. Please read this awesome article featured in the Yuma Daily Sun:

'United Way of Yuma County wouldn't be where it is today if it weren't for the support of the community. That's the message the nonprofit organization shared during its annual Volunteer Recognition Event Thursday.

The event was "our chance to give back to those who continuously support and advocate for us,” said Karina Jones, resource development and marketing director of United Way of Yuma County.

"This is the perfect event to highlight how local businesses and volunteers are advocating and giving back to their community.”

UWYC presented $125,000 collectively to various community partners and recognized other agencies, volunteers and local businesses who support the organization. The organization provides funding to member agency programs for health and human services.

Yuma Regional Medical Center was recognized as having one of the highest workplace campaigns in the city. Hospital employees raised more than $57,000 this year for United Way. Eldon Dyer, director of diagnostic imaging, accepted the award on behalf of the hospital.

United Way also recognized specific volunteers who lead the workplace campaigns at their businesses and agencies. Some of the awards given were:

• Highest Employee Campaign: Yuma Regional Medical Center

• Most Increased Overall Campaign: Wells Fargo Bank

• Campaign Volunteer of the Year: Karen Johnson, Yuma School District No. 1

YRMC has partnered with United Way of Yuma County for more than 10 years, Jones said. Throughout the many years that YRMC has been involved, hospital employees have contributed more than $500,000 to United Way of Yuma County and its partner agencies.

In addition to giving to the United Way, YRMC employees usually serve on the organization's Allocations Board. The volunteer board involves concerned citizens in deciding how the community dollars raised by UWYC will be invested in the Yuma community.

"Agency tours normally take place during work hours. YRMC has often allowed an employee to serve on this board and be excused from work,” Jones said.

Additionally, Wells Fargo employees doubled their giving this year, she said.

And Johnson has led the YSD No. 1 campaign for many years and "constantly encourages others to get involved and give to UW,” she said.

Southwest Gas and Arizona Public Service also send employees to serve on the board. Both companies are also top contributors to UWYC, Jones said.
